Despite the audience booing at the 1853 premiere, which Verdi and his librettist, Francesco Maria Piave, called “a fiasco,” “Traviata” has never strayed long from the stage. A second production in Venice was successful in 1854, and Madrid, Vienna and Barcelona mounted their own in 1855. London and New York saw “Traviata” the next year, and in 1883 it was featured with a more contemporary setting in the first season of the Metropolitan Opera. The Met’s run of “Traviata” beginning this month will end in June with its 1,076th performance by the company.
