What I have recounted is what Segal called her ur-story, and some version of it prefaces every article written about her. She could be wryly funny about the impossibility of escaping her past; in time, her exasperation with endlessly retelling the story of her childhood became an aspect of the story. “I wonder if the Ancient Mariner in his latter days got really tired of rehearsing his old trauma,” she ruminated in an essay. There was a kind of macabre joke in living as a reminder of historical atrocity. Segal took part in a documentary about the Kindertransport, “Into the Arms of Strangers” (2000), and when the film was screened in England she met King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales. “Before you got away, it got pretty bad, did it?” he asked her in the greeting line. Segal recalled that she could not tell whether the prince was vastly uninformed or simply demonstrating British understatement.
