The question of self-disclosure in therapy is one that all clinicians must grapple with at some point in their career. Once seen as something to avoid, the field has begun to recognize disclosure’s powers of humanization and connection, and many modalities encourage its use, to varying degrees, as a tool in a therapist’s kit. Yet training programs differ widely in their approach to the topic, and some barely address it at all—leaving many clinicians, especially those who are novices, conflicted as to whether sharing small pieces of themselves with a client might be valuable.
