Tess’s wild story involves, among other things, the sudden appearance of a violent man wielding a gun inside the cave. It’s not clear at first how it all adds up. Though Washington is a skilled interrogator, she’s nearing the end of her career, and her colleagues suspect that memory lapses are impeding her work.
