The narrator’s memories take her back to when she was 16, to a tipping point in her war with her mother, a war of curfews, lies and tremendous mutual anxiety. Her mother is scared of alcohol and drugs and pregnancy; she hates that her daughter has a friend one grade higher, and so “a year closer to potential corruption.”
