On a recent flight, we took off from London on a gray afternoon. Low crimson light flooded the cockpit as we rose from the clouds into a sunset we followed halfway across the Atlantic Ocean. Darkness fell before our descent, but the snowpack, which brightens every nightscape, revealed the forms of forests and icebound lakes. Soon, the Canadian wilderness gave way to the glowing streets of a river-island metropolis. We lowered the landing gear, landed on runway 24R, parked and went to our downtown hotel.
