This month’s column is nominally about painting furniture the old-fashioned way — by hand, with a brush, for a characterful finish — but it’s just as much about the process of self-education that’s at the heart of DIY. I really didn’t know what I was doing when I began. After experimenting and taking time to understand the mistakes I’d made, I came to know quite a lot.
