Nintendo has been in the opposing camp. The Wii’s motion-controlled breakthrough in 2006 made it more intuitive for non-gamers to use, and attracted swaths of new consumers. The Switch, which was launched in 2017 with modest hardware, follows in the footsteps of that earlier experiment. Making the consoles portable and accessible has taken precedence over computing power. Nintendo’s exclusive titles keep gamers loyal beyond the initial hardware appeal.
