This phenomenon seems to have radically accelerated. Despite entering government less than two years ago with a theoretical working majority of 181, Sir Keir Starmer is already suffering from major rebellions — most recently on jury trials and most significantly on welfare reforms. He has also amended his government’s plans in the face of threatened rebellions across multiple policy fronts, from the removal of the winter fuel allowance to inheritance tax for farmers. Reports suggest that the government’s nascent and confused plans for digital ID could be next.
