As the sun blazed down on a vast green set with a bridge over one of the Tuileries ponds, artfully scattered with large fake water lilies (and a clear hat tip to Monet), Anderson mused on the idea of public garden strolls by Parisians through the ages, and ideas of seeing and being seen. This ran the gauntlet from frock coats inspired by 18th-century aristocrats to more contemporary hammered silk track pants with buttons running down the sides, embroidered denim and accessories including heels embellished with silk roses and gilded lilies. There was even a charming frog purse. At times, it could feel twee. But after a sea of black coats this season, Anderson’s vision of a colourful and multi-faceted Dior world wasn’t just a pretty distraction; it has clear commercial considerations too.
