Some in Labour have blamed sectarian campaigning, but the reality is that the Green campaign in Gorton was nothing out of the ordinary on that score. It was the same sort of thing as, say, the Conservative mayoral campaign in London in 2016, which warned that Sadiq Khan would tax “gold jewellery” in an attempt to win over British Hindus, or the Labour campaign in Batley and Spen in 2021, which, in a bid to gain support from British Muslims, featured images of Boris Johnson, the then prime minister, shaking hands with Narendra Modi.
