That said, a little introspection by brands and their designers never goes astray. Often, it’s even a starting point for inspiration. At the Dolce & Gabbana catwalk show in Milan, where Madonna turned up 40 minutes late, the latest collection was called, quite literally, “Identity”. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana described it as “the ultimate luxury — being true to yourself.” And they are certainly that, having proudly built a distinctive aesthetic over decades for their brand that was loudly celebrated here. Delicate black lace mini dresses layered over scanty panties. Stained red lips. Androgynous pinstripe suits and slinky cocktail dresses, designed to enhance rather than restrict a woman’s curves. This house might have its critics and court its fair share of controversies. But it has never swayed from its recognisable style codes and appreciation of the female physique — gaining itself legions of fans in the process.
