The Kraken was a mythical Scandinavian sea monster that rose from the deep to swallow ships (and, in John Wyndham’s 1953 science fiction novel The Kraken Wakes, attack humanity). Kraken is now overtaking Octopus’s retail energy business in value, despite the latter having passed British Gas this year to dominate the UK market and squeeze other suppliers.
