And it’s not just Mexico City. Other major cities are struggling with the impact of tourism-led gentrification. Cape Town’s brand of it is showcased in unaffordable post-apartheid housing and the foodification of traditional dishes. Southern Europe saw anti-tourism protests this summer across Spain, Italy and Portugal, weeks after which similar tensions erupted in Mexico City. Here, protesters with signs reading “gringo go home” and “kill the gringo” took to the streets, targeting restaurants, bakeries and shops popular with tourists.
